After approximately 4 hours of sleep we were ready to reach our final destination-Bogota! While eating my grilled cheese and ham sandwich (Matt had the scrambled eggs) on the plane I finally set to work on my list of places to see and things to do in Colombia. At the top of my list are:
- El museo de oro (Gold Museum) in Bogota
- El Donacion Botero-Displaying many works of the great artist
- Villa de Leyva and surrounding areas including an ostrich farm
- Tayrona National Park-a fabulous tropical park on the coast
- Cartagena-one of the biggest port towns
- Ciudad Perdida (the Lost City)
- Zona Cafetera-where they grow the coffee
- Termales de Santa Rosa (hot springs)
- Isla Gorgona and...
- Popayan
Food and Drinks we must try:
- Cuy (guinea pig)
- Hormiga Culona (large fried ants) thats right, fried ants
- Chocolate Santafereño-cup of hot chocolate accompanied by a piece of cheese and bread (traditionally you put the cheese into the chocolate) and...
- Obviously, Colombian coffee
We arrived at Alegria´s hostel in la Candelaria district with no problem. Interestingly, in the cab ride we heard "San Francisco (be sure to wear flowers in your hair)" by the Mamas & the Papas. What a strange way to start our trip, right?
I'm glad you guys made it safe! The fried ants sound wonderful but... Seriously where's cocaine on the list?
ReplyDeleteWe once landed in Denver and heard John Denver singing "Rocky Mountain High, Colorado." And uh, Carla, the cocaine would be in a balloon up their cuchipandas.

Has Matt tried speaking any Spanish yet? I'd like a before and after recording when this trip is over.
ReplyDeleteguinea pig - I hear it tastes like chicken... :)
ReplyDeleteOur friends Amaya and Dave tried it and loved it. Poor furry cuy - bring one back for Belle! xo
Scott McKenzie would be honored to be mistaken for The Mamas and the Papas! Wonderful memory!
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys made it safe! Can't wait for more updates!
ReplyDeleteMel thanks for the correction. written by John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas
ReplyDeleteMika, Matts spanish is getting better by the day! I think he will come home fluent. I on the other hand didn't realize how rusty my Spanish is. I've been stumbling a lot!
Carla and Blaze. there is a bar in Bogota that apparently serves alcohol and coke so no worries it just might not happen in colombia which seems ridiculous i know
